TND – Obvious Answers, Optimism & Guinea Pigs

April 28, 2011

There are days when the obvious answer just completely escapes me.  I have spent hours trying to track down a phone number on the internet and never once had it occur to me to just try calling information for the number.  Conversely, I’ve spent the past month fruitlessly searching for amchoor powder and toor dal at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Penzys, Wilson Farms, Stop-n-Shop, and Food Master.  I had reached the point of trying to decide if I was curious enough to buy some online if the shipping was going to be twice the price of the product when it belatedly (as in, Wednesday morning) occurred to me that I could google Indian grocery stores in the Boston area and solve my problem that way. TND – First World Problems

April 20, 2011

Sunday was one of those days where everything seemed to conspire to make me irritable – my timing was a little off on everything, and nothing wanted to work quite as predicted.  It was a day full of what NPR refers to (correctly) as First World Problems.  Knowing that didn’t make them any less annoying. TND – Mistress Cranky Pants

March 30, 2011

Old stove went out on schedule, and more surprisingly new stove was delivered and hooked up on schedule.  I’m still forming my opinion of the new stove.  On the plus side, it heats up and stays hot even after you put something in to cook (which is what our old oven wasn’t doing that precipitated the call to our Landlady and the acquisition of a new stove).  The desserty bread thing I baked on Monday night did not burn on the bottom, which was another failing of our old oven, although the rest test will be cupcakes which always always burned in our old oven no matter how you tried to fiddle the temperature and baking time. TND – Slight Hitch in the Proceedings

March 23, 2011

There was a slight hitch in Dinner plans this week. And by slight hitch what I mean is, we didn’t have a stove on Tuesday night.

Theoretically (hopefully) a new stove is being delivered to our apartment this afternoon and by the time I get home will have been connected to the gas line. However, last night I couldn’t even make tea (the humanity!) so we relocated dinner to our favorite diner and indulged in breakfast for dinner.

TND – The Merits of Gloating

March 17, 2011

My parents have become migratory mammals.  In the summer they fly (well, actually they take a car ferry, but semantics) north to the Provence, and in the winter they journey south to the sunny climes of Malta, from whence they like to taunt me with emails about how they’re sitting outside on the quai having coffee in the 70 degree sunshine, and by the way how am I enjoying that snow in Boston. TND – Solomon Grundy

March 10, 2011

The Paschal season gives us Palm Sunday, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday . . . what, I ask you, did Monday and Saturday do to get left off the list*

Dinner this week fell on Shrove Tuesday aka Fat Tuesday aka Mardi Gras.  In the more dogmatic days when Lenten repentance and reflection was reinforced with fast days and a list of foods you weren’t allowed to eat, Mardi Gras functioned as the last hurrah before 40 days of abstinence and penitence.  These days Mardi Gras gets celebrated by a lot of people who aren’t planning on giving up anything for Lent, must less embracing the abstemiousness that’s supposed to characterize the next six weeks. TND – Oscars 2011

March 1, 2011

Where does the time go? I swear we just did this like a minute ago, and with movies I’d actually seen.

Still, it’s that time of year again.  Time to have firm opinions about winners and losers without any sort of evidence for said opinion.  Time to mock celebrities and their lack of ability to dress themselves mercilessly.  In other words, it’s time for the Oscars.

Since The Social Network and The King’s Speech were leading the pack for nominations, this year’s pot luck food theme was:

Junk Food Fit for Royalty

TND – The Invading Russian Army

February 23, 2011

Back when I was in high school – you know shortly after the last ice age and before cell phones became ubiquitous (although they did exist and were in fact small enough to put in your pocket – my father had one he never turned on except to call us from the Immigration line at the airport to say, “The Eagle has landed”) – I used to go hang out in downtown Geneva with friends on Saturday afternoons.

Before I’d leave the house I would always end up having some variation on the following conversation – and remember this was pre-cell phones, because if I’d had a cell phone the entire conversation would have been rendered moot. Read the rest of this entry ?
