Anyone else remember flying in the ‘80s? Back in the days before ebooks, and ipods, and ipads. Back in the days when your entertainment for the 7 – 9 – 12 – 18 hour flight was limited to one movie that was projected on a screen at the front of the cabin, and whatever books and games you brought on board with you? Back in the days when you confirmed your flight reservation by phone, and you wanted a seat as far forward in the plane as you could get because the smoking section was at the back of the plane? Back in the days when there was no baggage limit, and you could still go up to the cockpit to talk to the pilots?

Anyone remember the food? Or, more candidly, the substances which purported to be food, but were generally so unidentifiable and inedible that if you’d claimed they were soylent green nobody would much have disagreed with you. Read the rest of this entry ?

In a stunning example of either unfortunate coincidence or blackest irony, in the same week the Supreme Court ruled that a key provision of the 1965 Civil Rights Voting Act was unconstitutional the reigning doyenne of Southern Cooking, Paula Deen, was dropped like a hot potato by just about everyone after a deposition revealed that she had used ‘the n-word’. TND – Farm to Fork 2012

This is the annual Farm-to-Table Dinner.  Someone at Dinner foolishly asked if I could name all the farms that the produce came from, and not only can I tell you that, I can tell you when the corn was picked (5:30am the day I bought it – which, granted, I only know because that’s what the sign on the enormous pile of corn said, not because I actually asked).

SND – Holiday Edition

Thanksgiving dinner may not be a true MND experience, but there were 7 people involved AND I had access to a working oven, so I’m counting it.  Especially since I’m really behind in posting and “Sunday Night Dinner” appears stalled. I blame the holiday season. And traveling for work. 

Dressing (or stuffing) is one of those things that one tends to cook just once, maybe twice, a year – but it’s for meals that people expect to match their built up expectations, so it better be damn good. About 3 years ago, I decided that I wanted to learn how to make my MawMaw’s stuffing because no holiday family gathering would be the same without it. I think I finally have it down – though I’ve altered it slightly because, well, I think it needed a bit of kick. 

I was always a bit weird about what I would eat for Thanksgiving and Christmas as a kid (expecting, for some reason, that canned pineapple and black olives always be available. These made up a large portion of my meal. No, I can’t really explain it. MawMaw was very nice for indulging me. ) I always ate about a forkful of stuffing because it was expected (much like the black-eyed peas at New Years), but I wasn’t a big fan – it tended to be a bit too dry for me.So, below is the slightly altered family recipe.
